Chile is recognized as the leader in the Latin American solar PV market. It is reported that 741MWac of solar PV projects were becoming operational in the nation by the end of September, while additional 2.11GWac of solar PV is under construction.

According to PV Magazine’s citation, CIFES’s latest report measures 741MWac of commissioned solar in Chile by September, representing an 114MW capacity monthly growth from the 597MW in operation by August. Furthermore, 2.11GWac of solar PV projects are under construction and are scheduled to be gradually completed from October 2015 to August 2017, revealed by data from Chile’s National Energy Commission.

Same in CIFES’s report, the Chilean PV projects generated 131GWh of solar power in September, representing 2.3% of electricity generation in the nation’s main grids. The rate would be raised up to 8% once the PV projects are all completed. The 8% rate means that Chile could be one of the nations generating most power from solar in the world.

Chile’s government also aims to push the solar generation rate up to 19% by 2050; with all renewable sources, up to 70%.
