Apple became a legal independent power producer as soon as U.S.’s federal energy regulator approved the company’s application to wholesale electricity. This week, it was reported that Apple has constructed a 50MW solar power plant in Arizona, and the plant will soon start sending electricity to a customer.
Arizona-based utility power company Salt River Power (SRP) unveiled that its Board of Directors has approved an agreement to purchase the energy produced from Apple’s new 50MW PV power plant, breaking the construction. Apple’s 50MW plant, called Bonnybrook PV solar plant, has been completely constructed and is ready for grid connection.
“SRP is committed to working with our customers like Apple to meet their energy needs with the accelerated development of renewable resources, such as solar and geothermal, without increasing costs to our other customers,” said SRP General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Mark Bonsall.
SRP will purchase electricity generated by Bonnybrook PV solar plant “at a wholesale market rate” through a 25-year power purchase agreement signed by SRP and Apple. The exact price remains unknown to the public.
