The Environmental Protection Bureau of Chiayi Councy has set up a fleet of five electric cars for inspecting and combating air pollution emitted by motorcycles and cars, which account for 37% of PM2.5 shrouding the country, especially during Sept. through next March.
The employment of the five electric cars can cut 47.5 kilos of PM 2.5 emission a year, based on 300 kilometers of daily driving distance, according to Yien Hsu-ming, director of the bureau.
The environmental protection bureau points out that the move is in line with instruction on combating mobile polluting sources by Premier Lai Ching-te last Dec., setting deadlines for complete conversion to electric vehicles, including government-unit vehicles and public buses by 2030, new motorcycles by 2035, and new cars by 2040.
The electric-car fleet will be on call around the clock, ready to take action in response to complaints from local people. The five electric cars will be leased by ROPO Car.
Produced by local electric-car manufacturer KSG, the cars boast 400 kilometers of cruise range on full charge, employing European charging standards. A 30-minute charge will enable the car to travel over 100 kilometers, much longer than most other models.
