Taiwan Sugar has been actively responding to the government’s policy on green energy and circulation economy in recent years by stocktaking its in-house resources, accumulating external energy, and gradually implementing “solar PV” and “biofuel power generation”. The company pointed out that its solar power generation had reached 190 million kWh as of November this year.
As pointed out by the press release of Taiwan Sugar, the company had elevated its solar power generation from 6.5297 million kWh in 2019 to 190 million kWh in November 2021 through annual site expansion over the past three years, and now has installations at 39 rooftops, 2 ground setups, as well as 8 detention basins, where 2 ground setups (Yiwu of Yunlin and the Mayuan Farm) and one floating setup (Hebao Island of Chiayi) are expected to complete construction by the end of 2022, which will generate a total installed capacity of 546.63MW that equals an annual power generation of roughly 590 million kWh, and supply power to approximately 171K households.
Taiwan Sugar has also branched out to biofuel power generation. As pointed out by the company, one of the main reasons for actuating the particular path is the organic waste, such as bagasse, agricultural waste, and pig manure, that the company possesses, which generate energy while also realizing circulation and reuse of resources. Taiwan Sugar currently has two sugar refineries for cogeneration in Huwei and Shanhua, as well as generates power from pig manure of stockyards. The company also works with private businesses on the establishment of the Tung Sugar Energy Service Co-Digestion Biogas Center in order to plan for new blueprints for biogas power generation.
Pig farm transformation serves as the most critical segment for the biofuel deployment of Taiwan Sugar. 13 pig farms are to be transformed in two phases, with the first phase consisting of 6 units, and the second phase consisting of 7 units. The construction is scheduled to complete in 2023, and contribute to a total installed capacity of 38.45MW from solar and biogas power generation upon completion, with an annual power generation of 48.676 million kWh that provides annual power for 14K households, as well as reduces 24K tons of carbon.
