Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy announced today (1/10) that it will partner with 15 offshore wind power companies and local supply chains to develop the third phase of offshore wind power block development to make Taiwan an offshore wind power export center in the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, Siemens Gamesa also announced that it will expand its Taichung wind turbine assembly plant and it is expected to start the local manufacturing of SG 14-222 DD direct-drive offshore wind turbines in mid-2024.
Siemens Gamesa held the "Supply Chain Conference and the Third Stage Strategic Partnership Oath Ceremony" today. In addition to announcing the development of the power block, the next expansion plan for the Taichung nacelle assembly plant was also shared.
Siemens Gamesa officially launched Taiwan's first nacelle assembly plant in September 2021. Currently, production is at full capacity, with the entire supply supporting the 900MW Changhua Southeast and Southwest Phase 1 Offshore Wind Farms. After the Hai Long offshore wind power project has obtained the final investment decision of its partner. Siemens Gamesa will expand the Taichung nacelle assembly plant in the third quarter of 2022.
Siemens Gamesa’s plan is to double the land area of to its Taichung nacelle assembly plant to 8 hectares, build two new production lines and a warehouse, and also employ double the number of factory employees for on-site production of hubs and nacelles. Local manufacturing of Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD direct-drive offshore wind turbines is expected to begin in mid-2024. The nacelle of each offshore wind turbine is expected to have nearly 10,000 components in production and the expanded nacelle plant’s annual capacity will supply 2GW scale devices.
Siemens Gamesa Head of APAC New Markets - Offshore Regional Development, Gero Tschierschke stated, Siemens Gamesa will expand the Taichung nacelle assembly plant in the middle of this year. Siemens Gamesa hopes to deepen its partnership with Taiwan's local offshore wind turbine suppliers. Accumulated capacity can accelerate the learning curve. By joining hands we will enter the third stage of offshore wind power, increase industrial chain values through synergy, and build Taiwan into an offshore wind power export center in the Asia-Pacific region.
