A green energy development milestone! Taipower has been actively developing onshore wind power since 2001 and its cumulative power generation over the past 20 years has exceeded 10 billion kWh today (2/18).
Taipower explained that since the establishment of its first onshore wind turbine in Chuton, Penghu in 2001, Taipower has completed 168 onshore wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 297.04MW. In April 2015, the cumulative power generation capacity of Taiwan's western coast, Penghu, and Kinmen Islands reached 5 billion kWh.
In recent years, big data technology has been used to strengthen unit maintenance and improve power generation stability. Taking 2021 as an example, Taipower’s annual land-based wind power generation reached 672 million kWh, accounting for approximately 58.7% of national land-based wind power generation, which can supply nearly 170 thousand households for one year, and today reached the milestone of 10 billion kWh cumulative power generation.
Taipower further explained that, in view of onshore wind turbine installation sites being scattered and often in coastal environments, early models lacked lifts, forcing maintenance personnel to physically climb up 60 or 70 meter-high steel towers. There are unfavorable conditions such as stuffy heat, shaking, and vibration, which doubled the difficulty of early inspection and fan maintenance. In recent years, with the maturity of maintenance and operation technology, maintenance work had been combined with remote centralized monitoring and management. The application of big data technology is coupled with long-term collection of operation data to predict equipment malfunction in advance and arrange maintenance or the purchase and update of equipment to maximize normal operation and minimize maintenance manpower allocation, thereby increasing turbine availability and power generation.
Taipower pointed out that about a quarter of its existing onshore wind turbines have been operating for more than 15 years. In order to maximize wind farm capacity and wind turbine efficiency, it is formulating a sustainable utilization plan for future wind farms, which will comprehensively consider site conditions and unit status. This plan will integrated the use of large and small wind turbines, develop new wind farm models, and move towards sustainable thinking while taking into account local needs, coexisting, and co-prospering with the environment.
At present, in addition to continuing to develop onshore wind power, Taipower is also expanding new wind fields offshore. A total of 21 wind turbines in the first phase of Taipower's offshore wind power generation project were completed in parallel last year and the second phase of the project is also in full swing. In 2025, it will reach the development capacity target of 370MW for onshore wind and 403.7MW of offshore wind power.
