The board of directors of Taiwan Mobile approved the major target of attaining net zero mission by 2050 today, and promises to submit a net zero emission plan to the Science-Based Targets (SBT) initiative by the end of this year.
Daniel Tsai, Chairman of Taiwan Mobile, commented that extreme weather is threatening the survival space of humans, who are now forced to suppress the average temperature increment at 1.5℃. Taiwan Mobile had started planning since the end of last year in setting 2022 as the first year of the company’s net zero emission target by continuously establishing power plants and procuring green electricity, which gradually increases the utilization ratio of green power. The company also aims to attain 70% of in-house power plants, and is expected to achieve 20% of renewable energy utilization by 2030, before climbing to 60% by 2035, and eventually arrive at 100% before 2040.
In addition, Taiwan Mobile also laid down category 1 and 2 for 2030, which aims to reduce 30% of carbon emission by 2030 compared to that of 2019, as well as category 3, which promises to lower 15% of carbon emission from that of 2019. Through precise data analysis, Taiwan Mobile has stipulated the implementation process in phases, and continues to march towards the net zero emission target of 2050 in the hope of attaining sustainability.
Taiwan Mobile had incorporated the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) since 2018 as the highest architecture in evaluating businesses’ risk management, and is estimated to invest more than NT$10 billion in green power, carbon fee, and carbon reduction between 2022 and 2030.
Taiwan Mobile has established a renewable energy division that is responsible for the evaluation, establishment, and maintenance of power plants, as well as inquiring suitable targets for power purchases and transfers, in the hope of expediting green power development. The company had obtained 12.46MW of green power as of 2021, and is expected to complete the transfer of 3.5MW of PV systems by the end of this year. 24.95 million kWh of renewable energy is expected to be utilized then.
Taiwan Mobile commented that businesses are hoping to accelerate the adoption of green power, though the current predicament is that the supply has yet to catch up to the demand, which is why the company is urging the government to prioritize the significant demand for green electricity among businesses by drastically magnifying the ecosystem of green power provision and accelerating the supply of green power, so that businesses have nothing to worry about while pursuing the net zero emission target.
Aside from actively developing green power, Taiwan Mobile is also heavily dedicated in cutting grey power, including implementation of energy-saving methods for base stations, adoption of energy-saving air-conditioners and lightings, and enforcing energy-saving measures, and managed to conserve 10.778 million kWh of power throughout 2021. In addition, Taiwan Mobile has merged with T Star so as to further achieve energy conservation and carbon reduction, and looks forward to receiving the approval for the merger since the result would be a reduction of repeated 3G network maintenance and several thousands of repeatedly constructed 4G base stations, which is expected to conserve 74 million kWh of power each year under a carbon reduction of 37,148 tons that is equivalent to 95 Daan Forest Park.
