On March 21, at the press conference on the "first anniversary" of the construction of Shanghai's future industry pilot zone, Lu Yu, director of the high-tech division of the Lingang New Area Management Committee, said that Tesla's energy storage project will complete and put into operation in 2023, with a production scale of nearly 40GWh.
According to previous reports, Tesla's Shanghai energy storage gigafactory will plan to produce Tesla's ultra-large commercial energy storage battery (Megapack), which is scheduled to be put into production in the second quarter of 2024. In addition, the plant initially plans to produce up to 10,000 commercial energy storage batteries per year, with an energy storage scale of nearly 40GWh, and the scope of product provision covers the global market.
The goal of the Megapack is to assist in stabilizing the energy network as a giant battery. According to Tesla, each Megapack unit can store 3MWh of energy, enough to meet the average hour's electricity demand of 3,600 households. The new plant in Shanghai will initially produce 1 per year.
In addition, it is reported that Tesla and CATL are working together to develop batteries that charge faster. Accoeding to the news, Tesla will fully bear the construction cost and fully control the plant, and CATL will only be responsible for helping to install the equipment and will not participate in the operation.
The plant will also produce Tesla's large-scale energy storage Megapack batteries. The new plant is planned to have an initial capacity of 10GWh and is expected to be operational in 2025. If the project goes well, the supply chain can be established and production will be further expanded.
