According to Wechat Official Account @CESA, recently, Western Australian energy developer Synergy announced that 640 battery packs have been installed in the company's deployment of the 2GWh Collie Battery Energy Storage Project.
Installation of the battery packs and inverters commenced in early October 2024, and construction of the project began in March 2024 on the site of the decommissioned Collie coal-fired power station, which will be one of the largest battery energy storage projects in Australia when completed. The project will be connected to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), which links a number of cities and territories in Western Australia, including Albany, Banbury, Perth, Meriden, Kalgoorlie and Geraldton.
With all 640 battery packs and 160 inverters in place, the project is now entering the battery commissioning phase, and Synergy expects the Collie Battery Energy Storage Project to be fully completed later this year, before the Australian summer.
The project was built using an EnerC containerized lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery storage system supplied by Chinese battery manufacturer CATL.
Collie is a small town in the south-west of Western Australia, approximately 213 kilometers south of Perth, the capital of Western Australia.
French independent power producer (IPP) Neoen is currently deploying a 540MW/2,240MWh utility-scale battery storage project in the town, which is being developed in two phases. Construction of the first phase, sized at 219MW/877MWh, was completed in late October 2024. And Tesla is considering building a battery recycling plant in the town of Collie.
Synergy has two other battery energy storage projects in Western Australia. One is the Kwinana BESS 1 battery storage project, which is 100MW/200MWh in size and deployed at the Kwinana Gas Power Station, and the other is the 200MW/800MWh Kwinana BESS 2 battery storage project.
