Recently, global energy giant ACWA Power announced that it had successfully won two large-scale photovoltaic-storage integrated projects, NOOR Midelt 2 and NOOR Midelt 3, in an international tender organized by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN). These two projects are equipped with 400MWh of photovoltaic power generation equipment and 602MWh of battery energy storage systems, with a total capacity of 800MW+1.2GWh. The combined investment for both projects is approximately US$3.5 billion.
According to informed sources, in ACWA Power's successful bid, the energy storage component adopted Gotion High-Tech's energy storage solutions, including 314Ah energy storage cells, a 5MWh liquid-cooled energy storage system, and a 5.5MW PCS medium-voltage integrated unit. Additionally, Gotion High-Tech will provide after-sales maintenance services to assist in the stable operation of the projects.
ACWA Power focuses on the development, investment, and operation of power generation and desalination projects. Headquartered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the company has developed and operates 109 projects across 15 countries, with a total investment value of USD 117 billion. According to the company's financial report, ACWA Power achieved a net profit attributable to shareholders of SAR 1.172 billion in the first half of 2025.
In 2010, Morocco launched the NOOR National Solar Program aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The program primarily includes two major projects: Ouarzazate and Midelt. According to the plan, Morocco aims to increase the proportion of renewable energy in electricity generation to 52% by 2030. It is understood that ACWA Power has successfully developed the Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex in Morocco, with a total capacity of 580 MW, making it one of the largest solar power projects in the world.
In 2019, the NOOR Midelt 1 project was put out to tender, and a consortium comprising global energy giants EDF of France, Masdar of the United Arab Emirates, and Moroccan local companies was awarded the contract. The NOOR Midelt 2 and 3 projects are located in the Midelt region of the Atlas Mountains in northern Morocco. Each project has a solar power generation capacity of 400 MW and is equipped with a 602 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), totaling 1,200 MWh of storage capacity. Each project can provide 230 MW of power output for two hours.
“In this bidding process, global energy giants such as France's Engie, France's EDF, and the UAE's Masdar also participated. ACWA Power's success in securing the contract was made possible by Gotion High-Tech's deep involvement and technical support,” revealed the aforementioned insider.
In mid-July, the 5MWh liquid-cooled energy storage system developed by Gotion High-Tech obtained the compliance certification certificate for the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, issued by TÜV SÜD. The system is equipped with Gotion High-Tech's self-developed and self-produced long-life energy storage cells and features a compact module design that significantly reduces the footprint, meeting Morocco's requirements for high efficiency and high density. Based on Gotion High-Tech's factory in Göttingen, Germany, the energy storage system has achieved localized mass production and delivery.
Additionally, Gotion High-Tech's Morocco factory is progressing steadily and will also achieve localized production and delivery of batteries and energy storage systems in the future. Public information shows that in June 2024, the Moroccan government and Gotion High-Tech signed a strategic investment agreement to establish a super factory for new energy electric vehicle batteries in Morocco, with an annual production capacity of 20GWh and an investment of 12.8 billion dirhams (approximately 9.3 billion RMB).
