As of September 18, Sungrow and EP Produzione have officially signed an agreement to build a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Trapani area of Sicily, Italy, using Sungrow's PowerTitan 2.0 products.
According to Sungrow, the energy storage system will have a storage duration of 2 hours and a capacity of 100MW/220MWh, equipped with 44 PowerTitan 2.0 units. This also marks the first application of this product in the Italian market.
At the press event for the opening of Sungrow's Italian office, Emilio Manzoni, Head of Sungrow's PV & Energy Storage Business, introduced the PowerTitan 2.0 battery: "This product integrates a string inverter inside the container and is the world's first energy storage product capable of directly outputting alternating current (AC). It not only features a complete modular design but also offers advantages in energy density—making it an ideal choice for Italy, a country with high land costs that is in urgent need of compact and high-performance solutions."
In terms of functional positioning, this energy storage system will play a crucial role in managing the flexibility and stability of the Sicilian power grid. Its core application scenarios include providing frequency regulation and peak shaving in conjunction with renewable energy, as well as enabling grid balance adjustment.
The CEO of EP Produzione stated, "The Trapani project is the third electrochemical energy storage project we are advancing in Italy. Energy storage systems are a key component of the technology portfolio required for energy transition, which is why we continue to make significant efforts to expand our energy storage project pipeline."
In terms of safety and installation efficiency, the PowerTitan 2.0 architecture is equipped with a safety system certified through large-scale combustion tests. Sungrow emphasized, "The AC-DC modules of PowerTitan 2.0 adopt an integrated design, with pre-assembled battery modules and power conversion systems. This enables seamless integration and significantly shortens the project installation cycle."
Public information shows that EP Produzione is an Italian power company under Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH), a European energy group. Currently, it has a total installed generating capacity of approximately 5.2GW across 6 thermal power plants in Italy.
