Recently, Walid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone, revealed that Egypt will commission the first of three newly planned photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing plants in December.
Walid Gamal El-Din clarified the commissioning schedule for the three plants: the first will be put into operation in December, the second in March 2026, and the third is planned to be completed in the first half of 2027.
It is reported that the Suez Canal Economic Zone in Egypt is fully promoting the localization of the entire industrial chain for solar panel production, covering all links from glass to complete modules, so as to achieve self-sufficiency in local electricity in Egypt.
The plant to be commissioned in December is highly consistent with the previous project of EliTe Solar. In mid-December 2024, EliTe Solar launched a construction project in the China-Egypt TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone. With a total investment of up to 150 million US dollars, the project plans 2GW photovoltaic cell production lines and 3GW module production lines.
Another factory with Chinese capital background is invested and constructed by Sunrev. In June 2025, the foundation stone was laid for Sunrev's 200 million US dollar PV complex project in Ain Sokhna, which was originally planned to be put into operation in the first half of 2026. The first phase of the project will build two full-industrial-chain factories, each with an annual production capacity of 2GW for photovoltaic cells and modules.
The third factory is led by Atom Solar Egypt and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027. The enterprise is a transnational consortium whose members include JA Solar, UAE-based Southern Global Utilities, Bahrain's Infinity Capital, and Egypt's AH Industrial Management Company. The project plans an annual output of 2GW solar modules and 2GW solar cells, with a supporting 1GWh energy storage system.
