On February 18, Japanese battery manufacturer GS Yuasa officially announced that its "Battery Stable Supply Assurance Plan," aimed at the development and mass production of domestically produced lithium-ion batteries for energy storage, has been officially certified by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
The company will invest 70.3 billion yen (approximately 3.13 billion RMB) to construct an energy storage battery manufacturing plant with an annual production capacity of 2GWh in northern Tokyo.
This project aims to respond to the growing demand for grid energy storage brought about by the widespread adoption of renewable energy, reduce reliance on overseas supply chains, and strengthen Japan's localized supply system for energy storage batteries.
To support this strategic initiative, METI will provide the project with government subsidies of up to approximately 24.8 billion yen (around 1.095 billion RMB). These funds will be primarily allocated to the infrastructure construction of the new production base, as well as the introduction and improvement of advanced manufacturing technologies.
Reportedly, this project represents not only a major strategic layout for GS Yuasa in the new energy sector, but upon completion, it will also become one of the largest battery production bases in Japan.
According to the plan, the factory will complete its construction and equipment commissioning over the next few years. It is scheduled to officially begin supplying the market with high-quality, domestically produced lithium-ion energy storage batteries starting in October 2028.
