According to EnergyTrend, foreign media reported that on March 12, Swift Solar, a U.S. perovskite solar technology company, announced the acquisition of core assets (including HJT heterojunction technology), intellectual property rights, and the core team of Meyer Burger, a European photovoltaic firm. It also plans to build a GW scale HJT perovskite tandem solar factory in the United States.
Backed by Meyer Burger’s HJT technology, Swift Solar intends to construct a GW scale heterojunction cell and module factory in the U.S.Following the acquisition, Swift Solar can rapidly deploy mature HJT technology, avoid patent risks, and reduce reliance on the Chinese supply chain, aligning with the domestic manufacturing requirements of the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
Swift Solar was spun off from Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Both the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Rocky Mountain Institute are independent laboratories under the U.S. Department of Energy. The company has raised over USD 60 million in total funding.
Meyer Burger is a pioneer in HJT technology. Due to fierce industry competition and operational difficulties, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2025 and subsequently entered asset disposal, with the sale of core assets preserving its technological value.
The factory construction is planned to proceed in two phases:
Within 1–2 years, complete a GW scale HJT cell and module factory to fill the gap in high efficiency silicon capacity in the U.S.
Within 3–5 years, deposit a perovskite layer on the HJT production line, targeting a cell efficiency exceeding 30% and an approximately 40% increase in power generation per unit area, establishing the first GW scale tandem cell manufacturing base in the Western Hemisphere.
Technically, HJT’s low temperature process and excellent passivation performance make it the ideal bottom cell for perovskite tandems, enabling efficient utilization of the solar spectrum.The laboratory efficiency of HJT perovskite tandem cells has reached 30.99%. On the U.S. market side, IRA subsidies and local supply chain requirements, combined with surging electricity demand driven by AI data centers and grid electrification, provide strong support for the project.
This acquisition will help the U.S. photovoltaic industry shift from module assembly to advanced core technologies, and accelerate the commercialization of perovskite tandem technology.
