Windiga Energy, a Quebec-based solar producer, has commissioned a 20MV PV plant which will be located in Zina, in the Mouhoun province of Burkina Faso. The plant is set to be the largest PV power station in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project will be built and operated by Siemens Energy Smart Generation Solutions.
The Honourable Edward Fast, Canada's Minister of International Trade who was in Burkina Faso as part of a trade mission to Africa congratulated Windiga for the signing of the historic agreement stating, "This US$50 million project will help to meet the country's electricity needs." Following the announcement Minister Fast gave the opening address at the Renewables and Mining Summit in Johannesburg. Fabrice Nicolas from Siemens Energy Smart Generation Solutions also presented at the Summit.
Founded in 2010, Windiga Energy Inc. is Canadian-based IPP focused mainly on developing renewable energy facilities in Sub-Sarahan Africa. The company is an offshoot from SEMAFO - the TSX listed exploration and mining company. It is also one of a growing number of companies that were created to meet the energy needs of mining operations through renewables.
