Narendra Modi, known of his ambition to bring solar power into India, has introduced a draft and planned to build 20GW of ultra mega solar power projects over the next five years.
In order to take well advantage of India’s sun radiation to meet the demand of growing population and economy, the nation’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a proposal to build 25 ultra mega solar power projects with capacities between 500~1,000 MW (totaling 20GW) over next five years.
According to Clean Technica, the central government will have several responsibilities to implement the projects. The state governments and authorities would work on land acquisition, preparation, road and transmission connectivity and implementation of flood mitigation measures. MNRE will collaborate with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and authorities mentioned above to arrange processes include negotiation, development and financing. In addition, MNRE, SECI and the authorities will be responsible to managing the projects along with any private development companies. For each solar part, about US$40,000 subsidy would be offered.
The main purpose of the draft is both to encourage the states to develop renewable facilities and to encourage investment in local communities.
