Germany has taken a major step towards advancing its hydrogen energy sector by adopting an updated version of the National Hydrogen Energy Strategy on July 26th. The revised strategy outlines ambitious goals for the country’s hydrogen production from electrolyzed water by 2030. The strategy outlines three key objectives:
First, By 2030, Germany aims to meet a total demand for hydrogen energy amounting to 130 terawatt-hours (TWh) or approximately 6.5-7.8 million tons of hydrogen, considering a fuel cell efficiency of 50-60%. A significant portion, between 50% to 70%, will be imported.
Second, Germany plans to achieve an annual hydrogen production capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW) from electrolyzed water by 2030.
Third, to support the hydrogen economy, Germany plans to establish an initial hydrogen infrastructure network. The government intends to renovate and construct more than 1,800 kilometers of new hydrogen pipelines by either 2027 or 2028.
