Recently, Wanhua Chemical disclosed on its official website the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Announcement for the 120,000 tpa Iron Phosphate Expansion Project of Wanhua Chemical (Sichuan) Battery Materials Technology Co., Ltd.

According to the announcement, the EIA report for the “120,000 tpa Iron Phosphate Expansion Project” has been completed by Sichuan Huan Keyuan Technology Co., Ltd. Wanhua Chemical has now released the full text of the EIA report and the public participation statement. The additional capacity is expected to drive significant production growth. In the first half of this year, China’s iron phosphate output maintained a high year-on-year growth rate, averaging over 100%.

The project involves a planned investment of RMB 118.91 million and will be built within Wanhua’s existing site in Meishan, Sichuan Province. It will expand the company’s current 50,000 tpa iron phosphate facility (supporting Wanhua’s downstream LFP production) to 120,000 tpa by adding two new production lines. The project will adopt both the ammonium process and iron process technologies.

Wanhua Chemical began planning the Sichuan production base in 2017 and has since established Wanhua Chemical (Sichuan) Co., Ltd., Wanhua Chemical (Sichuan) Battery Materials Technology Co., Ltd., and Wanhua Chemical (Sichuan) New Energy Materials Technology Co., Ltd.

Currently, Wanhua’s battery subsidiary has completed Phase I of its 50,000 tpa integrated LFP cathode material project (including 50,000 tpa supporting iron phosphate capacity). In addition, its 100,000 tpa LFP Phase I project and 60,000 tpa LFP revamp project have received EIA approval and are under construction.

In February 2025, Wanhua Chemical broke ground on its next-generation battery materials industrial park in Haiyang, with a total investment of RMB 16.8 billion. The project will mainly build production plants for cathode and anode materials along with supporting facilities. The first phase, a 100,000 tpa LFP project, is scheduled to start production in June 2026. Once fully completed, the park will have 500,000 tpa of LFP and 300,000 tpa of synthetic graphite anode capacity.

The fourth- and fifth-generation LFP products, commonly referred to as “high compaction density LFP,” offer higher packing density, higher specific capacity, and longer cycle life compared to mainstream third-generation LFP products. Wanhua Chemical began mass production and supply of its fourth-generation LFP in the first half of 2025, while its fifth-generation product has completed prototyping and was officially launched.
