BYD Expands Zhengzhou Power Battery and Component Production

published: 2025-09-01 14:24

On August 25, the website of Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone released a notice titled “Public Disclosure on the Acceptance of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Documents for Two Projects, Including the Expansion of the Zhengzhou Power Battery Production Line Project.”

According to the disclosure, BYD is adding two expansion projects — the Zhengzhou Power Battery Production Line Expansion Project and the Zhengzhou Fudi Battery Liquid Cooling Plate Production Line Project — both invested and constructed by Zhengzhou Fudi Battery Co., Ltd.

The two expansion projects serve dual purposes: increasing power battery production capacity and strengthening supply chain self-sufficiency through supporting component projects.

The Zhengzhou Power Battery Production Line Expansion Project involves a total investment of RMB 5 billion, utilizing existing workshops or reserved land within BYD’s New Energy Industrial Park. Similarly, the liquid cooling plate production line will also be built using existing facilities within the park.

Liquid cooling plates are key components of power battery thermal management systems. Their principle of operation involves circulating coolant through internal channels to absorb heat, which is then transferred to the external environment via a CDU (Coolant Distribution Unit), ensuring the battery operates within a safe temperature range.

Zhengzhou Fudi was established in August 2022 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fudi Battery Co., Ltd., itself 100% owned by BYD.

From an investment perspective, BYD has committed several hundred billion RMB in Zhengzhou, aiming to build one of the world’s largest and most advanced manufacturing bases.

In September 2021, the Henan Provincial Government and BYD signed a strategic cooperation agreement. Construction of the project began just 37 days later, and production started smoothly within 17 months. In just over two years, by November 2023, BYD’s 6 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) rolled off the production line at the Zhengzhou base — making BYD the first automaker in the world to reach this milestone.

In 2024, BYD’s Zhengzhou plant produced 545,000 NEVs, a year-on-year increase of 169.8%. This output accounted for 87% of Zhengzhou’s total NEV production, generating an industrial output value of RMB 86.28 billion and driving a 161.7% surge in the city’s NEV industry.

The plant’s designed production capacity is 400,000 units per year. With planned Phase II and Phase III projects adding another 750,000 units, Zhengzhou BYD’s annual capacity is expected to exceed 1 million vehicles.

On the power battery side, according to an EIA disclosure released by the Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone in February 2023, the Zhengzhou Fudi New Power Battery Production Line Project is planned with a total investment of RMB 8 billion, aiming to reach 40 GWh of power battery production capacity upon completion.

So far, Zhengzhou Fudi has successively planned and built several projects in the region, including the New Power Battery Production Line Project, Battery Pack Disassembly and Assembly Line Project, Power Battery Components Production Line Project, 20 GWh Energy Storage System Project, and Phase II After-Sales Battery Pack Repair and Maintenance Project. Among these, the energy storage system project was canceled, the disassembly line has already been completed, while the others are progressing steadily.

In addition, an August disclosure revealed that the Phase II New Materials Production Line Project at BYD Zhengzhou involves the construction of a battery shield plate production line, with an annual capacity of 4.704 million sets, a total investment of RMB 114.39 million, and RMB 2 million allocated to environmental protection measures.

As BYD’s largest contiguous vehicle production base, the Zhengzhou facility boasts a 98% automation rate. A power battery cell can roll off the line every 30 seconds, and a complete NEV can be produced in under one minute. Zhengzhou Fudi Battery and BYD Auto Zhengzhou Co., Ltd. work in close coordination, ensuring battery capacity aligns with vehicle demand — cementing Zhengzhou as one of BYD’s most important global manufacturing hubs.
