On September 13, CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited) signed a cooperation agreement with Egyptian battery manufacturer BME (Battery Manufacturing Company) to jointly build a battery manufacturing plant in Egypt.
Under the development plan, the facility will be constructed in phases. Phase I involves an initial investment exceeding 2 billion Egyptian pounds (approximately 261 million RMB) with a planned annual capacity of 1 GWh, focusing primarily on power batteries for heavy commercial vehicles.
Upon completion of Phase II, the plant's annual production capacity will expand to 5 GWh. Its product portfolio will broaden to encompass passenger vehicle batteries and energy storage systems for renewable energy projects, including solar and wind power. Additionally, the project targets a 40% local content rate, supplying both Egypt’s domestic market and overseas export markets.
BME is a newly established Egyptian joint venture co-founded by MCV (Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles), an Egyptian commercial vehicle manufacturer, and Auto D (Auto D for Industry, Trade and Supplies), an automotive industry solution provider. Through this partnership with CATL, BME plans to produce battery systems locally in Egypt to supply automotive manufacturers operating within the country.
