TMEIC Passes PV Inverter 'ZVRT Test' in China for the First Time

As Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corp (TMEIC) announced that its "Solar Ware630" PV inverter for large-scale solar power plants has passed the "ZVRT (zero voltage ride through)" test of China for the first time, TMEIC has decided to build a large-capacity PV inverter company at Yancheng, Jiangsu, called Yancheng TMEIC Power Electronics Corporation. The company will begin the operation in February, 2015.

ZVRT is a function that prevents the collapse of a power grid even when an instantaneous power failure occurs due to, for example, a short-circuited power grid and the voltage of the grid drops to zero. With the function, even in such situations, PV inverters continue to operate while being linked to the grid.

In many countries including Japan, the "LVRT (low voltage ride through)" function is required. The LVRT enables to continue to operate PV inverters even when the voltage of a power grid instantaneously drops to 30%. In China, where requirements for grid connection are severer, the ZVRT, which includes higher technical standards than the LVRT, is required.

The test was conducted at China Electric Power Research Institute, State Grid Corporation of China, which is a state-owned electric utilities company. And the Solar Ware630 (model number: PVL-L0630E) with an output of 630kW passed the test.

The market for solar power generation in China is the largest in the world and is expected to continue to grow moderately. TMEIC has already started to produce the PV inverter in China and plans to take advantage of this opportunity and target at 1GW of production capacity to accelerate sales in the Chinese market.
