Saft’s Evolving Li-ion Technology Reduces the Battery Weight Burden for Telecom Operators

published: 2011-10-12 15:31

Saft, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of high-tech industrial batteries, will reveal at Intelec 2011 how Li-ion battery technology has evolved to create a high energy backup power system that offers full and universal compatibility with a wide range of telecom applications including CO (Central Offices), DPCO (Distributed Power for Central Office), MSC (Mobile Switching Center) and BTS (Base Transceiver Station). This new Evolion concept, described in a paper during the conference, has been developed to provide an ultra-compact, lightweight battery solution with the flexibility to be installed inside or outside, on-grid or off-grid, in very hot or extremely cold environments and in remote or hard to access locations.

In addition to the new Evolion, visitors to Booth 1.10 will be able to see Saft’s full portfolio of advanced telecom battery technologies developed to provide the ideal combination of performance, reliability, safety, low/zero-maintenance and long life in the challenging uncontrolled environment usually found in outside plant (OSP) cabinets. These include the well-established Intensium 1 and Intensium 3 Li-ion batteries as well as Saft’s field proven nickel-based batteries including: the high energy, maintenance-free Tel.X range; Sunica.plus optimized for use in PV applications; SPH low-maintenance batteries for engine starting on diesel-powered gensets.

Conference paper details

The conference paper Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology evolves to serve an extended range of telecom applications’ will be presented by Joel Brunarie of Saft in session 2.4 at 11.45 am on October 10.

The paper describes the development of the 48 V Evolion Li-ion battery concept with an ultra-compact, lightweight modular design that offers exciting possibilities to create compact, safe and reliable backup power systems for a wide range of telecom applications. It then goes on to review a number of different application scenarios in which the specific advantages of this new generation Li-ion technology are demonstrated.

The paper concludes by explaining how the Evolion concept provides optimized TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), long service life, zero maintenance, smart communication and environmentally friendly materials in a single package.
