IKEA, one of the world’s largest home furnishings retailer that aims to bring a more sustainable life to the earth, designs a 1.18MW rooftop solar PV system for its new store in Renton, Washington. The PV array will be the largest rooftop PV array in the state once completed.

REC Solar is responsible to development, design and installation of the new store’s solar system. Covering a space of 244,504 square foot, the PV array will utilize 3,240 solar panels and is expected to produce around 1,319,000 kWh of electricity annually for the store.

“We are excited to further our sustainability commitment with solar panels on this relocated Seattle-area store,” said Diedre Goodchild, store manager. “Installing Washington’s largest rooftop array advances our vision of creating a better everyday life for the many.”

This installation will represent the 44th solar project for IKEA in the United States, contributing to the IKEA solar presence atop nearly 90% of its U.S. locations, with a total generation of more than 40MW. IKEA owns and operates each of its solar PV energy systems atop its buildings and globally has allocated US$2.5 billion to invest in renewable energy through 2020. So far, IKEA has installed over 700,000 solar panels on buildings and owns about 300 win turbines across the world.
