Tesla Recalls Over 475K Units of Two Models Suspected of Rearview Mirror and Trunk Issues

According to foreign media, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Tesla has recalled over 475K units of the Model 3 and Model S due to possible rearview mirror and trunk issues.

The coverage of CNBC reports that the recalled models were produced between 2014 and 2021 at a quantity of nearly 500K units, which equals the delivery volume of Tesla last year. According to NHTSA, Tesla will be recalling 356,309 units of the Model 3 manufactured between 2017 and 2020 to resolve the rearview mirror problem, as well as 119,009 units of the Model S to fix up related issues at the bonnet.

As pointed out by the coverage, the NHTSA commented that the issue of the Model 3 lies in the possible damages to the wire harness of the rearview mirrors from the opening and closing of the trunk, which obstructs the image display at the rearview mirrors. In terms of Model S, the faulty latches may accidentally open the front trunk without any warnings, which impedes the driver’s sight and increases risks of collision.

The NHTSA pointed out that Tesla claims there has been no correlation between any collisions or incidents and the recall, and Tesla has yet to provide further details regarding this implementation.
