1.45 billion RMB! Tesla's Shanghai Energy Storage Megafactory Gets Construction Permit

published: 2024-05-15 15:43

Recently, the official release of the Administrative Committee of Lingang New Area of Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone said that the construction project of Tesla's Shanghai Energy Storage Megafactoryy has completed the issuance of construction permits.

Public information shows that Tesla's Shanghai energy storage factory covers a total area of about 200,000 square meters, with a total investment of about 1.45 billion yuan. The factory is close to Tesla's Shanghai Megafactory, which is also Tesla's first energy storage mega factory  project outside the U.S. mainland.

According to Tesla's official announcement to the public in April, the Shanghai energy storage mega factory is scheduled to start construction in May this year, and mass production will be realized in the first quarter of 2025.

Focus on production of ultra-large commercial energy storage batteries

Currently, Tesla's energy storage products include Powerwall, Powerpack and Megapack. The Shanghai Energy Storage Mega Factory mainly produces Megapack, an ultra-large commercial energy storage battery, with an initial planned annual output of 10,000 commercial energy storage batteries and an energy storage scale of nearly 40GWh.

Specifically, Megapack is a large-scale commercial and industrial energy storage solution from Tesla that is not just a battery, but a complete, integrated energy storage system. Each Megapack unit is capable of storing more than 3MWh of electricity, enough to power 3,600 homes for one hour, and can be placed outdoors independently without the need for complex climate control systems.

In addition, Megapack integrates the battery, temperature control system and power conversion equipment to form a simple and efficient energy solution, simplifying the installation and operation process while reducing system costs. Meanwhile, Tesla's management software is able to monitor Megapack's status in real time and optimize charging and discharging strategies through intelligent algorithms to further improve energy efficiency.

In addition, Megapack's modular design means that energy storage capacity can be flexibly expanded to meet the needs of projects of different sizes. In terms of application scenarios, Megapack is able to provide a wide range of grid services, including frequency regulation, emergency backup power, peak shaving, etc. It can also work seamlessly with renewable energy generation facilities to realize a 24-hour uninterrupted supply of clean power.

Simply put, Megapack is like equipping the grid with a giant, renewable “rechargeable treasure” that can store energy when solar and wind power are abundant and release power when needed.

Currently, Megapack has been using renewable energy to provide local power supplementation and security in a number of locations in North America, Asia Pacific, and Europe. These projects include, but are not limited to, the Elton Battery Energy Storage Project in California and the Victoria Big Battery Project in Australia. Tesla's entire energy storage product, on the other hand, has been deployed in more than 65 countries and regions around the world, with more than 1,500 sites in operation, totaling more than 10 GWh deployed, and a record 4.1 GWh installed in the first quarter of this year.

Energy storage projects feed automotive business

When Tesla released Master Plan 3 (the master plan) last March, CEO Musk said, “Tesla's master plan is built around a sustainable energy economy.” And in the 2024 quarterly report, Tesla used this sentence to elaborate the whole ecosystem - “More Than Just Vehicles”.

Taken together, Tesla's layout of energy storage is designed to build a comprehensive sustainable energy ecosystem that integrates new energy vehicles, solar products, and energy storage devices. This ecosystem aims to drive the world toward zero carbon emissions by seamlessly integrating the generation, storage and use of renewable energy.

The Shanghai energy storage plant will focus on the production of megapack batteries. As an important part of the ecosystem, Megapack not only strengthens Tesla's leadership in energy storage technology, but also provides strong support for its electric vehicle business.
