Another 5GW BC Cell Technical Renovation Project Enters Approval Phase

According to EnergyTrend, the technical renovation plan for the 5GW solar cell mass production project of Sany Silicon Energy (Zhuzhou) Co., Ltd. entered the approval process on July 20.

Public documents show that the planned total investment of this technical renovation project stands at RMB 3 billion. Relying on the existing production lines within the plant, the project will adopt the self-developed PEpoly passivation technology route, integrating passivation contact technology with the conventional IBC cell structure to develop high-efficiency new-type all-back-contact cells, namely new-generation IBC cells.

It is learned that the theoretically designed full-size IBC cell can achieve a conversion efficiency of 27%, with a current density of 42.51mA/cm², an open-circuit voltage of 745mV and a fill factor of 85.5%. This cell structure can suppress carrier recombination and delivers excellent electrical and optical performance. A 5GW mass production line for new-type IBC cells is planned. The mass production efficiency is expected to reach no less than 26.5% with a yield rate above 93%, facilitating the coordinated development of the IBC cell industrial chain.

In April 2025, the filing publicity was completed for the New Cell Technology R&D and Equipment Upgrade Project of Sany Silicon Energy (Zhuzhou) Co., Ltd. Filing documents indicate that this pilot project also employs the self-developed new PEpoly passivation technology route. It plans to upgrade equipment including coating, laser and wet processing equipment, phasing out 6 sets of outdated equipment and installing 10 sets of new equipment.

It should be noted that the technical renovation project now under approval retains the project name of the 5GW solar cell mass production project filed back in 2023. Initially, the project was designed to build N-type TOPCon cell production lines, which have already been put into operation. The current initiative represents a technical upgrading of existing production capacity.
