EnergyTrend: An Emerging Product in Solar Application - Micro Inverter

Solar micro inverters can be used to suit the structure of a single module, independently tracking the maximum power output of every module. In addition, it also improves the shadow problem of traditional inverter, increasing the efficiency and reliability of a solar system. EnergyTrend estimates that the penetration rate of solar micro inverters may reach 15~20%.

In terms of conventional solar inventor, the total efficiency of module array is easily affected by each module, which causes an increasing shadow area. The total efficiency decreases as a result and it is also not easy for manufacturers to manage and monitor the system. Electric arc also produces an ongoing plasma discharge, which may cause damage to the components. However, the system that adopts micro inverter can minimize the problems mentioned above because the total efficiency equals the sum of individual module’s power output without being affected by one or another. Each module maintains its maximum power output which optimizes the total performance of a system as a result. The AC current generated can easily be connected to the grid or directly used by households.

Subsidy policies will end one day and what determines the future of solar industry is the cost. Use of micro inverters can reduce the cost of installation and maintenance, which in turn reduces the cost of BOS and solar power generation.

Both Taiwanese manufacturer Delta Electronics and Logah Technology expressed their positive outlook for micro inverters by devoting to research and development of this fairly new technology. Though the market penetration rate is still low, the growth potential is enormous. EnergyTrend estimates that the penetration rate of micro inverters will grow to 3% in 2011 and 15~20% by 2015.
