BYD Sets up an R & D Center in Hong Kong Science Park and Starts R&D Collaboration with APAS and HKPC to Develop Electric Vehicles

BYD Company Limited (BYD) announced today the setting up of a research and development (R&D) center in Hong Kong Science Park, and its collaboration with the Hong Kong Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems R&D Centre (APAS) and the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) to promote the development of electric vehicles.

Mr. Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD Company Limited said the strategic location of Hong Kong has bestowed it with many unique advantages, making this cosmopolitan city an ideal place for a broader use of electric vehicles. In addition, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government’s pro-active approach for promoting the use of electric vehicles is also conducive to opening up a market for electric vehicles. Mr. Wang added that the enhanced collaboration between BYD and research institutes in Hong Kong would contribute to the development of a new generation of zero-emission electric vehicles dedicated for the Hong Kong public transportation system.

BYD will set up an electric vehicle R&D center in Hong Kong Science Park to facilitate its collaboration with research institutes in Hong Kong. Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTPC), Mr E. Anthony Tan welcomed BYD to establish a base in Hong Kong Science Park, “Green technology is one of our focused technology clusters. Promoting the development of electric vehicles would further reinforce Hong Kong’s position as an intelligent andenergy efficient city. HKSTPC will make every endeavour to support and facilitate the development in this area.”

Collaboration between BYD and Hong Kong research institutes to develop electric vehicles will cover the integration of BYD’s electric vehicles technology and automotive parts and accessory systems. developed in Hong Kong for demonstration of their applications. Three automotive parts and accessory systems developed in Hong Kong will be installed onto BYD’s electric vehicles for demonstration. BYD will also participate in the Electric Cars Exhibition of the InnoCarnival this November. Both sides will also explore opportunities of a trial use of electric vehicles in Hong Kong.

Chief Executive Officer of APAS, Dr Ying Yang pointed out that there had been growing recognition of low-carbon economy and environmental protection initiatives in the community. APAS has committed to developing core components and related technology for electric vehicles. Dr Yang expected that the collaboration with BYD could help meet market demand for electric vehicles and provide a new penetration point to the knowledge and innovation based economy for local industry.

Chairman of HKPC, Mr Clement Chen said, “HKPC is honoured to collaborate with BYD, one of the top electric vehicles manufacturers in the Mainland. With the collaboration between BYD and HKPC, I look forward to strengthening HKPC’s R&D in electric vehicles related technologies, with a view to assisting more Hong Kong companies to seize business opportunities in this field.”
