Saft Launches New SRM + Compact Cost-Effective Solution for High Energy Backup Onboard Rolling Stock

Saft, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of high-tech industrial batteries, is launching its new generation SRM+ railway battery developed to provide the ideal, cost-effective solution for high energy backup applications. SRM+ delivers high performance, reliability and a 15-year plus service life in a fully recyclable single cell package that has the same installation footprint as a block battery.

Visitors to Stand 19 in Hall 4 at TRAKO will also be able to see Saft’s extensive range of battery systems that meet any current railway application, including auxiliary backup and diesel engine starting.

SRM+ for optimized TCO

SRM+ has been purpose designed to save operating costs throughout its long service life to provide an optimized TCO (total cost of ownership). Its single cell design offers a high level of flexibility in configuring the battery system and also provides outstanding chargeability over an extended temperature window.

SRM+ combines Saft’s SRM sintered/PBE construction, field proven over 20 years of service and millions of track kilometers, with the advanced plate and electrolyte technology deployed on its industry leading MRX design. This ensures total reliability for high energy backup applications, even in the toughest operating conditions, including a wide range of temperatures from -20C to +50C.

SRM+ is ideally suited for a variety on onboard backup energy applications covering passenger safety and comfort (lighting, door control, ventilation, communications and so on) and fail-safe electronic systems start-up.

SRM+ for efficient use of the onboard battery space

The SRM+ compact single cell design requires 25 percent less overall installation space than the SRM, making its footprint comparable with a block battery. This enables train OEMs and operators to install more equipment or to carry more passengers to boost revenue/profit.

SRM+ covers all requirements from single cells to integrated battery systems

The SRM+ range features single cells with a wide range of capacity steps from 70 to 360 Ah. They are available in a choice of plastic, polyamide flame retardant or polypropylene flame retardant plastic containers with an optional water-filling system for safe, easy and efficient annual topping up. SRM+ cells also fit within Saft’s range of standardized battery systems and can be integrated into a customized tray, designed, engineered, tested and certified to meet specific application requirements.
