Goldwind Begins Mass Production of High Altitude Wind Turbines

published: 2011-10-24 14:15

Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology Co., Ltd. (Goldwind) recently has begun mass production of its permanent magnet direct drive (PMDD) 1.5MW wind turbines customized for high altitude areas. This marks one step further in the company’s commitment to provide customers with series of products applied to different operation conditions.

In April this year, the first two high altitude 1.5 MW prototypes were successfully built up and connected to the grid in Xi Tie Mountains (around 3000 meters above the sea level) of Qinghai Province. They have since maintained an impressive average availability of 98.5% or above. Each unit can annually generate 2.8 million kWh, with an air density of .88 kg/m3 and average wind speed of 6.5 m/s.

The new turbine’s design features improved technology including larger blades, enhanced thermal insulation, as well as strengthened protection against lightening and radiation. With these features, this design can withstand differences in wind density, frequent strikes by lightning and thunder, strong radiation from the sun and other challenging conditions of China’s northwestern and southwestern high altitude regions.

Goldwind is China’s first wind turbine manufacturer to mass produce low wind speed and high altitude wind turbines. Besides, the company has already established its strong R&D and mass production capacities in other segments like low temperature, high temperature and offshore.

Goldwind´s PMDD turbines provide the highest in-class efficiency, lowest lifecycle costs and exceptional grid connection features as a result of full power conversion. Goldwind’s dedication to R&D innovation and quality excellence helps preserve its leading role as a wind power total solutions provider and world’s largest PMDD manufacturer today.
