On February 2, Huaneng Lancang River (Changdu) Hydropower Co., Ltd. was officially established. With a registered capital of RMB 4.8 billion, the company is registered in the Karuo District of Qamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region, with Li Ran serving as its legal representative.
Regarding its shareholding structure, the new entity is a joint venture between Huaneng Lancang River Upper Reaches Hydropower Co., Ltd.—a subsidiary of the China Huaneng Group—and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL). Specifically, Huaneng Lancang River Upper Reaches Hydropower invested approximately RMB 4.272 billion, securing an 89% stake as the largest and controlling shareholder. Meanwhile, CATL invested approximately RMB 528 million, holding an 11% stake.
The company's business scope encompasses core power infrastructure operations, such as hydropower generation and power supply. Its activities also extend into diverse sectors, including solar and wind power generation, energy storage technology services, research and development of new energy technologies, and the operation of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
This collaboration is not an isolated event. As early as September 2025, China Huaneng and CATL signed a strategic cooperation agreement, explicitly outlining plans to deepen their partnership in areas including product manufacturing, new energy, energy storage construction and operation & maintenance (O&M), scientific innovation, and the nuclear power industry. The establishment of this joint venture in Qamdo marks a crucial step for both parties in implementing that strategic agreement and jointly building a new power system.
