The 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) at the UNFCC saw global leaders agreeing to accelerate renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency efforts. The world is now gearing up for a new paradigm shift in the way we generate and consume energy.

ASEAN is aiming a region-wide target to make 23% of the total primary energy supply to be from RE by 2025. Recognising the huge potential RE market that ASEAN now offers, coupled with Malaysia being the world’s third-largest producer of PV modules and components, the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) now aims to capitalise and expand the solar PV sector amongst other green technologies.
Organised by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Malaysia and co-organised by Malaysian Green Technology Corporation, IGEM is one of ASEAN’s largest green technology business and innovation platforms. Since its inception in 2010, IGEM has attracted over 300,000 visitors from over 50 countries and generated an estimated of USD2.2 billion worth of business leads.
Themed “Green Business for Sustainability”, IGEM 2016 will be held from 5 to 8 October 2016 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. This premier event will see a particular focus on Green Energy featuring a Solar Energy Exhibition Zone, comprising solar PV manufacturers and companies from around the world.

IGEM 2016 will also host ASEAN’s premier Solar PV Conference themed “Bridging Key Performers”, jointly organised by the Malaysian Photovoltaic Industry Association (MPIA) and Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA), representing industry associations from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Singapore amongst others.
The conference will showcase five areas pertinent to the growth of the solar PV industry, namely:
• Institutional policy and frameworks
• Trends and performance of PV systems
• Training, competency and standards
• Business, finance and insurance
• Investment opportunities in PV-related manufacturing industry
The conference is expected to gather 300 delegates from across the globe including Germany, China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, India, Australia and ASEAN countries. The key speakers lined up for the conference include representatives from the Solar Power Europe, German Solar Association, Thailand, China, Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and Malaysia’s Energy Commission (EC).
Topics that will be discussed include The Future of Electricity Supply Industry in ASEAN - Are We Ready for Distributed Generation?, Photovoltaic Market Liberalisation, Harmonising Training Competency and Standards in ASEAN and Investment Opportunities In Photovoltaic-related Manufacturing Industries in Malaysia.
