China’s PV industry grew rapidly during the first half of 2022, according to the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The main growth drivers were the worldwide efforts to achieve net-zero emissions and the widening adoption of clean and renewable energy technologies across various applications. The latest data from MIIT and other industry associations reveal that the main sections of the domestic PV supply chain posted a year-on-year growth rate of more than 45% in production volume for the first half of the year. Details are as follows:

  • Domestic polysilicon production reached around 365,000 tons for the first half of 2022, showing a year-on-year growth rate of 53.4%.
  • Domestic PV wafer production reached around 152.8GW for the first half of 2022, showing a year-on-year growth rate of 45.5%.
  • Domestic PV cell production reached around 135.5GW for the first half of 2022, showing a year-on-year growth rate of 46.6%
  • Domestic PV module production reached around 123.6GW for the first half of 2022, showing a year-on-year growth rate of 54.1%.

China’s PV exports also rose in both price and volume during the first half of the year. Module exports grew by 74.3% year on year to 78.6GW. The total PV exports during the period came to around USD 25.9 billion in value, up by 113.1% year on year.
