Brazil's Distributed PV Installed Capacity Surpasses 29 GW

The Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (Absolar) recently announced that the installed capacity of distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems in Brazil has surpassed 29 GW. This signifies the widespread installation and adoption of distributed PV systems across residential, commercial, industrial, rural, and public buildings in Brazil, benefitting 3.7 million consumers from solar energy.

According to data released by the association, Brazil has installed over 2.6 million distributed PV systems on rooftops, building facades, and small plots of land. Since 2012, the distributed PV market in Brazil has attracted nearly BRL 142.5 billion (approximately USD 27.67 billion) in investments, created over 870,000 jobs, and contributed more than BRL 42.3 billion to public finances.

The association emphasized that distributed PV systems have been installed in 5,545 municipalities across Brazil, playing a crucial role in reducing electricity costs for consumers. Ronaldo Koloszuk, Chairman of the Absolar Board, highlighted the favorable market conditions in the country. He noted that the average price of PV modules significantly decreased in 2023, making it easier for various types of consumers to install PV systems.

Rodrigo Sauaia, Executive Director of the association, underscored the geopolitical significance of the growth in Brazilian PV generation, pointing out its positive impact on sustainability, reducing household expenses, and enhancing the competitiveness of the country's production sector.

The guidelines recently issued by the Brazilian National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) further emphasize the benefits of distributed generation. These guidelines align with Law No. 14,300/2022, which aims to ensure a fair and transparent pricing mechanism for distributed generation, consistent with Absolar's advocacy for a comprehensive evaluation of the costs and benefits of self-generated solar power.

Research conducted by Absolar in collaboration with consulting firm Volt Robotics indicates that the electricity savings achieved by Brazilians operating PV systems are substantial. It is estimated that by 2031, the savings will exceed BRL 84.9 billion. This study highlights the important role of distributed generation in cost reduction and enhancing the reliability of Brazil's power system.

Absolar stated that it will continue to work with the Brazilian National Electricity Regulatory Agency (Aneel) to advance the development of distributed generation calculations, aiming to optimize the benefits of self-generated solar power for consumers nationwide.
