428MWh User-Side Lithium Battery Storage Project, the Largest in China, Breaks Ground in Guangyuan

On July 30, the user-side energy storage project by Great Power and Zhongfu Green Hydro-Aluminum officially broke ground in Guangyuan. With its outstanding charge/discharge power and storage capacity, the project has become the largest user-side lithium battery energy storage project in China, supporting Guangyuan’s goal of becoming an energy security hub in the Sichuan-Chongqing region.

Located in the Guangyuan National Economic and Technological Development Zone, the project involves a total investment of RMB 400 million. It features a charge/discharge power of 107 MW and a storage capacity of 428 MWh—significantly higher than other user-side lithium battery energy storage projects in China. It is designed to serve Guangyuan’s major green aluminum production base in the Sichuan-Chongqing area, helping enterprises reduce costs and improve efficiency for high-quality development.

User-side energy storage typically includes battery energy storage systems (such as lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries), which store electricity during off-peak hours or periods of renewable energy generation. Users can then release the stored power during peak demand or high electricity price periods, achieving peak shaving and valley filling. Compared to traditional electricity usage models, user-side storage offers significant advantages in terms of flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

"With user-side storage, enterprises can replenish electricity at any time, maximizing equipment efficiency," said Huang Keqin, Chief Engineer of Sichuan Zhongfu Technology Development Co., Ltd. By storing electricity during low-price nighttime hours and discharging during high-demand daytime periods, energy utilization efficiency is greatly improved. The company estimates that around 110 million kWh of electricity can be shifted annually through this approach.

“With a dedicated energy storage station, it’s as if enterprises gain a giant ‘power bank’—enabling self-storage and usage, while also supporting government demand-side management initiatives,” said Li Ling, General Manager of Energy and Technology Co., Ltd. “Enterprises can participate in peak shaving during high-demand seasons like summer and winter, ensuring power supply to critical loads.”The project benefits not only the enterprise but also supports the surrounding industrial park’s distribution grid. It is expected to generate RMB 200 million in annual economic benefits and reduce carbon emissions by 15,000 tons. Phase I of the project is scheduled to be operational by the end of this year.

Guangyuan has also recently launched a series of energy storage stations and AI virtual power plant projects, including a 200 MWh grid-side electrochemical storage facility, adding further momentum to its goal of becoming a key energy security base for the Sichuan-Chongqing region.
