India’s first CSP R&D center aimed at LCOE to be discussed at INDIASOL 2014

Ener-T and Indian Oil Corporation will be sharing their insights into the technical innovations being planned at the CSP R&D center under development in Jodhpur at the INDIASOL 2014 conference.

The concentrated solar power (CSP) industry in India is bridging the gap between Phase I and Phase II of the National Solar Mission (NSM) with government initiatives such as two pilot projects and also the recent announcement a CSP research and development center opening in 2015.

The center will be the first of its kind in India, it is classified as an experimental plant where CSP technologies, storage concept and materials will be researched and innovated in an attempt to achieve levelized cost of energy on a continuous basis for upcoming CSP projects in India.

There have been many lessons learnt from Phase I that shall be taken into consideration at the center such as technology choice, accurate DNI readings, site selection and building up a local supply chain. For this reason, the center is promising news for the industry as CSP begins to take off again after a large gap between Phase I and Phase II.

Ener-t International, the Israel based provider of CSP power plants, will be preparing a detailed project report for the initial establishment of the center, which will thereafter be handed over to the consortium leading the project - Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IITJ), where the center will be located, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL); and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). In a recent interview with CSP Today, Yehuda Harats, Ener-t’s Founder and Chairman, explained that ‘The center is planned to open in 2015 with the latest CSP technologies, and will support India in its program to become a world leader in CSP’.

Yehuda Harats, and Umish Srivastva, Senior Research Manager, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd will be attending the INDIASOL 2014 conference and giving an in-depth overview of the CSP R&D center and the targets in place.
