200GWh! CATL, Tianhua Times, and Other Energy Storage Companies Accelerate Capacity Expansion

published: 2026-03-02 13:57

The lithium battery supply chain has seen frequent moves recently. CATL plans to add 200GWh of capacity in Ningde, Fujian Province, with a total investment exceeding 60 billion yuan; two major solid-state battery projects have completed their signing in Shanghai; and Sichuan Tianhua Times New Energy has commenced construction on its 3 billion yuan Phase II lithium battery materials project, as industry expansion continues to advance.

200GWh! CATL Ramps Up Capacity in Ningde, Fujian

On February 28, CATL and the Ningde Municipal Government of Fujian Province signed a strategic cooperation agreement for the Ningde "Zero-Carbon & Technology" Bay City.

It is reported that this collaboration closely centers on the two core themes of "zero carbon" and "technology." It systematically plans 33 specific initiatives across 8 areas, including global headquarters, battery research and development, production capacity, application scenarios, and the zero-carbon ecosystem. With a total investment exceeding 60 billion yuan and a planned capacity of 200GWh, the projected output value upon reaching full production will exceed 100 billion yuan. This will drive a batch of upstream and downstream supply chain supporting projects to accelerate their clustering and synergistic development.

Two Major Solid-State Battery Projects Signed and Settled in Shanghai

On February 27, the solid-state battery project of Dejia Energy (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and the solid-state battery project of Yuanchenhangneng Technology Development Co., Ltd. were officially signed.

Reportedly, Dejia Energy is a high-tech innovative enterprise led by national-level leading talents, focusing on the R&D and production of high-performance solid-state batteries and their core materials. The Lingang project being constructed this time plans to build a 3GWh solid-state battery production line in two phases.

The project signed by Yuanchenhangneng focuses on core solid-state electrolyte technologies. It aims to achieve the R&D and production of all-solid-state lithium batteries with high energy density and high safety performance. It is expected to complete equipment commissioning and enter production before the end of 2026.

Tianhua Times New Energy Phase II Lithium Battery Materials Project Commences

On February 24, the construction of the Sichuan Tianhua Times New Energy Phase II lithium battery materials project officially started in the Ganmei Industrial Park.

With a total investment of 3 billion yuan, the project primarily involves building a production facility and supporting infrastructure for extracting lithium from spodumene using the sulfuric acid method to prepare battery-grade lithium carbonate, featuring an annual capacity of 60,000 tons. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and put into production in the first quarter of 2027.

Following the implementation of this project, Tianhua Times will possess a flexible production capacity of 60,000 tons/year of battery-grade lithium hydroxide (which can be flexibly converted into 53,000 tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate) and 60,000 tons/year of battery-grade lithium carbonate. This will enable it to flexibly adapt to market demands for different raw materials used in lithium battery cathodes.

As of now, Tianhua New Energy has established three major lithium salt production bases in Yibin, Meishan, and Yichun, with capacities of 75,000 tons, 60,000 tons, and 30,000 tons, respectively. It has also collaborated closely with lithium mines in countries such as Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Australia through off-take agreements and equity participation to form a stable supply chain. Its clients include CATL, LG Chem, SK On, and Samsung SDI.
