British mining company Anglo American and French renewable project developer EDF Renewables have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop a “regional renewable energy ecosystem (RREE)” in South Africa. Specifically, 3-5GW of renewable generation and energy storage will be set up over the next decade to power Anglo American’s business operations in the country. Zamani Saul, Premier of South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, stated that the Redstone Concentrated Solar Power Project (the Redstone CSP) in the town of Posmasburg is schedule for completion in 2023. He made the announcement at a government meeting held on February 24. As one of the top 10 countries in coal production, the structure of power generation for South Africa is primarily formed with coal-fired power generation, and the ratio had reached to 88% in 2018.
