First Wind, an independent U.S.-based wind energy company, announced it will again sponsor scholarships and school awards for the 20th Annual Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) Science Bowl. First Wind owns and operates the two phases of the Milford Wind Corridor projects that deliver clean, renewable power to Los Angeles and several nearby communities, including Pasadena, Burbank, and Glendale.
“We are very pleased that First Wind has agreed to sponsor scholarships and school awards for our 20th Annual LADWP Science Bowl, for the second year in a row,” said Lorraine Paskett, LADWP’s Senior Assistant General Manager, Sustainability Programs and External Affairs. “First Wind’s Milford projects are a significant source of clean, renewable energy for the LA community. By continuing its support of this scholarship, First Wind is also supporting some of the community’s best and brightest students.”
Output from the two operational phases of the Milford Wind Corridor have the capacity to provide power for about 64,000 Southern California homes, while avoiding 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions that would result from conventional regional generation sources in a typical year.

The 20th Annual Science Bowl competition will be held on Saturday, February 25 at LADWP’s downtown headquarters (111 North Hope Street). More than 260 students on 53 teams from 30 public, charter and private high schools throughout the city will compete. The winning team as the regional champion will travel to Washington, D.C. from April 26-30, to represent the city and compete at the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl. There, the LADWP regional team will face 68 other teams from more than 40 states. LADWP regional championship teams are among the best in the U.S., having won four national titles and placed among the top five teams 10 times. The trip to Washington, D.C. is funded by the Department of Energy.
The Science Bowl demonstrates the LADWP’s commitment to the city’s youth and the Los Angeles educational community. A proud LADWP tradition, the Science Bowl tests students’ reflexes, teamwork skills and knowledge of science, math and technology in a fun, competitive atmosphere following a television game show format.
As part of its second year as a sponsor of the Science Bowl, First Wind is providing $10,000 in scholarships and awards to schools and students. In the Buzzer Competition, First Wind is providing five $500 scholarships, one to each member of the competition’s second place team, as well as five $200 scholarships for each member of the fourth-place team. In addition, First Wind is providing a donation of $1,750 to the school of the second-place winner, as well as $1,250 to the school of the fourth-place winner.
For the competition’s First Wind Hands-On Competition, First Wind is providing 20 scholarships ranging from $100 for the fourth place team members to $250 for the first place team members.
